A Boeing 747 landed at Twente Airport on Wednesday afternoon, 6 December at 13:05. It is the largest passenger aircraft ever to land at the regional airport. The arrival of the plane attracted many spectators at the new spotter's hill in particular.

The Boeing 747-400 took off from Schiphol around 12:15pm. The aircraft with flight number KL9879 is 23 years and 11 months old and carries the name Rio de Janeiro. The aircraft weighs 183,500 kilos and has a top speed of 988 kilometres per hour. The length of the aircraft is 71 metres and the wingspan is 64 metres.

The Boeing 747-400 will be dismantled in a sustainable manner at Twente Airport by AELS. The dismantling will take about three months. It is the second aircraft to be dismantled by AELS. Earlier this year, an Airbus A340-300 from Swiss had been flown to Twente Airport for this purpose. AELS' work fits in perfectly with the circular economy and is good for employment.
